By The Way, The NHL Is Back
October 6, 2008
In case you were busy with World Series odds like the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers folding in the postseason, or the Houston Texans collapsing on Sunday, or the Wisconsin-Ohio State matchup, or Paris Hilton’s search for a new BFF, then it’s time to let you know that the NHL is back.
The NHL technically started it’s regular season on Saturday as a couple of games were played in Stockholm, Sweden and Prague, Czech Republic, but it’s actually in the middle of it’s pre-season. The rest of the regular season will kick off this Thursday. Yawn. It’s too early to care about the NHL season, especially since it’s not even that cold out yet.

Do You Care About The Ryder Cup?
September 17, 2008
The 2008 Ryder Cup is happening this weekend and although Europe versus the USA isn’t exactly LSU-Auburn or Florida-Tennessee, there is some intrigue. Or is there? I’m not sure.

There’s no Tiger Woods, which is like going to see Destiny’s Child and Beyonce not showing up.
All week long, American media outlets have been selling the US team like this big underdog story. In most sports, it’s the perfect angle but it is the 2008 Ryder Cup and there isn’t a whole lot of personality around. The US team has been worked over badly in recent meetings and now without their best player, they should have no shot to win it, right?
But it’s golf – not basketball, or football. And the underdog story just isn’t working so well. Forgive me if I don’t have any connection to J.B. Holmes, or Ben Curtis, or Chad Campbell. I could barely pick them out of a lineup.
Online sportsbook odds have Europe as a -140 favorite over the Americans.
The U.S. team will need a monster Thursday to get my interest. Otherwise, I’m more focused on Florida-Tennessee or LSU-Auburn. Auburn will win, by the way.
Earl Boykins: Short In Stature, Tall In Stacks
August 6, 2008
Somebody want to tell me what is wrong with this picture?

Earl Boykins, who was the shortest player in the NBA, is the latest to make a dash for European luxury. He signed a one-year, $3.5 M contract with Italy’s Virtus Bologna, which is probably $3.5 M more than his next best offer in the NBA. Does anyone really care? Somebody call Spudd Webb and Mugsy Bogues out of retirement and tell them there’s money to be made in Italy.
Boykins is now the highest paid player in whatever Italian league Virtus Bologna plays in, which sounds like a log of Bologna to me.
First Josh Childress, then Carlos Arroyo and now they took Earl “The Pearl” Boykins. David Stern better watch out especially if LeBron James is taking Euro offers seriously.
