March Madness betting is down to one month and counting. For now, let’s deal with this Alex Rodriguez business.

So he’s a steroid user. Are you really that surprised? Does anyone even care anymore at this point?

I think a lot of people who hand around the water cooler like to have this type of debates but realistically, for thos who bet sports, it’s not that big of a deal.

What’s relevant to us is if he plays on a daily basis or not. Sure he took drugs. I’m sure it might cross the minds of thsoe who are betting on Daytona 500 odds as to whether a specific driver is getting an illegal boost. But at the end of the day, what can we do about it?

We can cry about it and hope it changes, but the reality is that we just have to deal with it. Just bet a different sport in your sportsbook if you want to make a statement.

Almost Time To Go Bowling

December 2, 2008

College football is winding down and since we don’t have a playoff, we get to go bowling instead. Here’s a brief look at some of the upcoming bowl games not including the lingerie bowl:

Insight Bowl Odds – December 31st

Looks like it will be Wisconsin vs Kansas. Looks like it will be boring.

Independence Bowl odds – December 28th

Louisiana Tech versus Louisiana Lafayette. Louisiana fans will enjoy this.

Emerald Bowl odds – December 27th

Cotton Bowl odds – January 2nd

Texas Tech and Ole Miss are the likely candidates – how sexy is that? The Red Raiders potent offense up against the dangerous Ole Miss defensive line. The Rebels are hot right now – I trust them more.

Chick-Fil-A Bowl odds – December 31st

Probably going to be a defensive showdown between South Carolina and the loser of the ACC Championship Game (Boston College/Virginia Tech)

Capital One Bowl – January 1st

Looks like Michigan State will take a beating from Georgia in this game. Michigan State is really one-dimensional.

Sugar Bowl odds – January 2nd

Loser of the SEC Championship will probably play here against Ohio State or maybe, but unlikely, Boise State.

Orange Bowl odds – January 1st

Cincinnati players were already seen with an Orange in their mouth so they’ll make up half of the Orange Bowl. The other half will be the ACC Champ.

BCS Championship Game – January 8th

Everyone is assuming that Florida and Oklahoma will be there. Florida still has to go through the No. 1 team in the nation in the SEC Championship game but it’s all but assumed this will be the BCS Championship game.

Monday Night Betting

November 10, 2008

Yes, I’m in that mood like the guy in those ESPN Monday Night Football commercials who can’t wait for Monday Night Football odds.

For the game, I’m not sure whether I would want to lay so many points with my sportsbook, though. Ten points is a lot and San Francisco is off of a bye week. Does a bye week mean anything? (See: Carolina, New Orleans and San Diego).

How about a teaser? Maybe tease down Arizona to 2.5 but tease it with what?

I like the Indiana Pacers in basketball betting – I don’t have much faith in Oklahoma City on back-to-back nights.

I also like Duke minus the points, which is a huge spread at about 36.5. But that’s what I’m teasing with Arizona. Arizona -2.5 and Duke -30.5 – Presbyterian is an awful team.

Georgia vs LSU odds:

LSU is a dangerous opponent, but Georgia is just a little bit better at the skill positions (quarterback, running back wide receiver).

Pick: Bet on Georgia

Oklahoma State vs Texas odds:

OK State is a nice team and they are capable of pulling the upset. The question is can Texas play with the same intensity as they played with against Oklahoma and Missouri.

Pick: Bet on Oklahoma State

Penn State vs Ohio State odds:

Penn State vs Ohio State is essentially the Big 10 Championship. I’ll lean with the home team.

Pick: Bet Ohio State

Giants vs Steelers odds:

The Giants lost in the AFC North just two weeks ago. It will happen again this week.

Pick: Bet on Steelers

Colts vs Titans odds:

Colts are desperate for a win but they might not be good enough to defeat an undefeated team. The Titans should be able to run wild on the flimsy Colts defense.

Pick: Bet on Titans

Chargers vs Saints odds:

Chargers vs Saints in Londontown – Chargers need this game more – and their the better team.

Pick: Bet on Chargers

Phillies vs Rays odds:

Phillies may have snaked home-field advantage but their bats are still quiet. Take the Rays on the series.

Pick: Bet on Rays

NASCAR odds:

Carl Edwards is the favorite? No thanks, I’ll take Jimmie Johnson.

Pick: Bet on NASCAR odds

Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe odds:

Roy Jones Jr. is washed up. He’s about to get his ass handed to him.

Pick: Bet on Joe Calzaghe

UFC 90 Odds:

Cote can punch, so Silva has to be careful. If he is careful, though, then Cote doesn’t stand much of a chance to last through two rounds.

Pick: Bet on Silva

The NBA season kicks off in just under one week so don’t forget to visit your local sportsbook and bet on sports, aka bet on your favorite regular season win total. Here are a couple of mine:

Los Angeles Clippers over 34.5 Wins:

The Clip show has had an interesting offseason. They subbed out Corey Maggette and Elton Brand, and brought in Baron Davis and Marcus Camby. Look at this starting five and tell me that this is a sub-.500 team:

G Baron Davis

G Cuttino Mobley

F Al Thornton

F Marcus Camby

C Chris Kaman

That’s pretty solid. Then you throw in the bench, which includes flashy rookie Eric Gordon, Tim Thomas, Ricky Davis and Brian Skinner. That’s not bad. The Clippers will hit the over.

Indiana Pacers under 34.5 Wins:

Does anybody care about the Indiana Pacers anymore? It’s hard for me to get excited about a starting five that has T.J. Ford, Danny Granger, Mike Dunleavy, Troy Murphy and Jeff Foster. There is no star power on this team, which figures to be a problem on a nightly basis. And if T.J. Ford gets hurt, this team is in some trouble.

Take the under here.

In a stretch to combine two unrelated items, here’s one of the best viral videos of the week. Although, it’s an actual commercial and an actual product.

Umm…yeah.

In other news, enjoy being Washington State this weekend, who has to face the USC Trojans. Washington State as allowed 60+ points in two of the last three games to teams that USC has stomped this season. Enjoy. Sportsbook odds list USC as a 42-point favorite.

Or you could focus on a matchup that will be much closer – like the World Series odds.
